As for any public educational establishment
long term cost savings was a key objective, and low lifetime maintenance
liabilities was high on their list of needs, as well as lower energy usage.
Considering these needs, Sylvania lighting fixtures were recommended by the installer G-Electro,
based on performance in previous projects, and the minimal building work required
to fit them.
Busleyden Athenuem’s Steven Van der Taelen, the project leader, said: “From the outset, our team agreed that as well as needing to be easy
to install and maintain, while also reducing energy consumption by 50%, the new
lighting scheme must also improve the light quality for users.”
185 of the school’s traditional 2X58W T8 fluorescent lighting fixtures were replaced with
RANA LED surface mounted luminaires and SylSmart sensors through the building’s classrooms and corridors. SylSmart uses the very latest technology
to detect human presence and natural light levels, adjusting the levels of
light emitted and power consumed, to deliver light only where and when it is needed.
Despite these remarkable benefits the smart
functionality of the SylSmart system is wireless and no control cabling is
required. So if, as in this case, the existing power infrastructure does not
need replacing, then very little new cabling is needed to install SylSmart
lighting, keeping installation costs and disruption to a minimum. This simplicity
also combines with the long working life of the fixtures to minimise
maintenance requirements.
The Campus Pitzemburg comprises a variety of
environments, with some rather unusual. For instance, in the sports hall the
lights are recessed in the 6m high ceiling. Despite the tall ceilings and other
quirks of this building, because the installation team fitted RANA LED luminaires,
light distribution was unaffected, low luminance levels provided users with visual
comfort and installation occurred with minimal disruption.
SylSmart
enables the school to wirelessly control luminaires and tailor light surroundings
to their precise requirements. Each and every classroom was provided with a
wireless wall switch with multiple lighting presets to choose from. This
versatile and intuitive SylSmart system features a timer to maximise efficiency
and the fixtures used function perfectly, sensing the conditions and lighting
the area accordingly. Tracking levels of natural lighting and sensing when
staff and students are actually occupying a room means that only areas which
require lighting are illuminated, reducing energy consumption and cost.
